Leslee (Les) Lake owns and operates Lakewood Arts out of his home in Shoal Harbour, Newfoundland, which was started in 1998. Lake carves stone, wood and whale bone into pieces of art. Les has been carving for 17 years, ever since he was a kid.
Les will find a piece of wood, stone or whale bone, and using his imagination, try to see a design. Once he sees a design, he begins to carve the design that he is visualizing. However, if he finds an interesting piece of wood (or stone/bone) he may not always see a design right away, so he will bring it home and keep it there until he sees a design which could be months later.
Les will usually be working on four or five carvings at any given time. He will spend anywhere from one hour to over a hundred hours on a particular piece.
Lake takes great pride in his work so he will not be finished with a piece until he feels that it is "perfect". Les always has "a story behind every carving"
